If you love working with children with special needs, you may enjoy becoming a special education teacher. It is a very rewarding career that you can help to make a difference in many lives during your career. Becoming a teacher in general is rewarding because you get the opportunity to make a change in someone’s life but a special education teacher can be a mentor to a child and can make a valuable impression on that child for life.Once you go through college and receive your degree you will then be able to find a job where you can work as a special education teacher. Look for a long term position but work as a substitute as often as you can until that position becomes available. Special education teachers usually stick to their position for many years before being transferred because it is so rewarding. Once you learn about your students and you maintain your classroom the children will have a sense of stability and everything works good together.Once you have a position as a special education teacher the first thing you want to do is send a letter home with all your students to introduce yourself to parents and guardians. Request a one-on-one meeting with each parent/guardian within the first two weeks of starting. Meeting with the parents will give you the opportunity to understand more about every child from a parent’s point of view. No other person can give you a view of that child better than the parents/guardians.While meeting with parents it is important to take notes, talk about your child’s behavior at home, and how they feel you can make a positive impact on their child. Before your meeting it is important to review each child’s notes to see how they are doing in school and what weaknesses they seem to be exhibiting. You can discuss your findings with the parents during your parent-teacher meeting. Have a meeting that covers more than one purpose. For example, showcase the students art work or science project that they may be covering.Schedule parent meetings as often as you can preferably one time each month in order to update the parents, talk situations over with them, and determine what to do next. There are many different solutions to each problem so it is important to know where to go that will satisfy everyone. If a child is displaying behavioral issues all of a sudden then you need to discuss what you have noticed and how you can decrease the amount of interruptions or behavioral problems in class.A special education teacher is a special job that not everyone can do. It takes hard work, compassion, and the ability to love and nurture your children that creates a positive environment that a child can learn in. Work with parents, grandparents, relatives, friends, and professionals that have a helping hand in that child’s life to achieve the goals that you set for the child and to help them accomplish all milestones.

How To Determine Your Child’s Eligibility For Special Education

services? This article will discuss the criteria that school personnel must use, by law to
determine if a child is eligible for special education services.In order for a child to be found eligible they must meet two criteria, according to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA):1. The child must have a disability, and2. The child must have educational needs.In order for special education personnel to determine if a child is eligible, they must conduct a psychological evaluation called a Case Study Evaluation (CSE) on the child. Below is a list of important things parents must know about the CSE:a. The parent must give written consent for this to be done.b. School personnel have sixty days from when the parental
consent is signed, to finish evaluation.c. More than one assessment tool must be used; to gather
all of the academic, developmental, functional, information needed to
determine if the child has a disability.d. The child must be assessed in all areas of suspected disability.e. They must use assessment tools that provide important information
that assists them in determining the child’s educational needs.After the Case Study Evaluation is complete an eligibility meeting is
held. The meeting is to go over the test results, and see if the two criteria for eligibility are
met. The parent is to be an equal part of the team that determines if a child has a disability,
and if they have educational needs. Parents may bring information on
their child to help the team make the decision.If a child has a disability and educational needs, and does not
receive special education services, their lives may be negatively

Special Education – How You Can Write Effective Letters to School Personnel

Are you a parent of a child with a disability who would like to write
effective letters, to special education personnel? Would a short list
of things to include be helpful? Letters are important documentation,
of what is happening in your child’s education. This article will
address 7 items that should be included in special education letters,
to make them effective, and easily understandable.Letters should be one page if possible, and contain these items:Item 1: You should include your name in the letter, as well as the
name of your child with a disability. If the specil education person
is an administrator, they may not know you or your child. That’s why
it is important to include both in the letter.Item 2: You should include your child’s birth date. Some school
districts often use a child’s birth date, for identification purposes.Item 3: You should include the date when you are writing the letter;
month day and year. Letters sent to disability educators become part
of your child’s school record. By dating the letters, anyone looking
at the record can tell when it was written. The date the letter was
sent may be important in the future, if a dispute occurs between you
and your school district.Item 4: You should very clearly state the purpose of the letter. For
Example: “I am writing you today to tell you of my concerns for my
child Mary, whom I believe may have a learning disability, in the
area of reading. I am asking that she be tested using a standardized
reading test such as the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test. When the test
results are finished, we can discuss them at an IEP meeting.” or “I am
concerned that my son John may have autism, I would like a childhood
autism rating scale (CARS) to be filled out for him. When this is
completed, I would like to have an individual educational plan (IEP) meeting to discuss the results.”Item 5: You should include the person’s name that you are sending the
letter to, their title, and school address.Item 6: The letter should contain a hand signature at the bottom of
the page, by the parent writing the letter. If the letter is used in
the future, it holds more weight if it is signed.Item 7: The letter should include any written documentation or reports
that help your case. For Example: “I am including a letter from the
Occupational Therapist, about the behavioral difficulties my daughter
Sarah, who has autism, has been having during therapy time.” After the
signature put the word attachments in the left hand margin, and list
the name of all attachments. Be sure to include the attachments with
the letter. If you are like me, you may forget and leave the
attachments out, so double check that the attachements are included.By including these important items in your letters to school
personnel, you are ensuring that your letter is easy to read and to
understand. Documentation is critical in case of a dispute between you
